Pitch & Resonance
Understanding Pitch:¶
When trying to feminize your voice, you want to try to maintain a voice pitch frequency between 140hz and 260hz. Staying within this range generally falls within a few frequencies while speaking within the M1 Register:
- A3 (220hz)
- B3 (247hz)
- C4 (262hz)
Starting Range
C3 to G3 is a good goal to set for vocal stability, then once you are comfortable speaking at that pitch range, then reach for the higher frequency ranges of A3, B3, or even C4, as mentioned above.
Practical Exercises / Warm-Ups:¶
- Using "Z" sounds, like imitating a BEE sound, in scales from low (140hz) to high C4 C#3 (262hz), then back down to low, can help warm up the vocal cords for practice. Repeat this for about 5 minutes.
- Using an "M" sound, matching tone G#3 (208hz), then start saying 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in the same tone, then read the rainbow passage below in a monotone, to stay within the same G#3 (208hz) tone, to control the "Voice Gravity" until you are comfortable maintaining it.
- Hold an "O" sound, and slowly ramp it from a low pitch to a high pitch in as smooth a motion as possible, trying to avoid voice cracking.
Rainbow Passage
"When the sunlight strikes raindrops in the air, they act as a prism and form a rainbow. The rainbow is a division of white light into many beautiful colors. These take the shape of a long round arch, with its path high above, and its two ends apparently beyond the horizon."
Pitch Range & Pitch Behaviors¶
Understanding Resonance¶
Vocal resonance refers to how sound vibrations produced by the vocal cords are amplified and modified as they pass through spaces like the throat, mouth, and nasal cavities, giving the voice its fullness and richness. Pitch, on the other hand, is the highness or lowness of a sound, determined by the frequency of the vocal cord vibrations.
Practical Exercises / Warm-Ups:¶
Speak with a really soft "awwwwww" like you are seeing the cutest puppy or kitty in your life. Keep saying it, getting softer and softer each time, until it reaches a point that is almost hard to push air out to maintain the sound, then start reading the rainbow passage seen previously.
Note
This will cause you to soften your voice and control your breathing better for longer sustainable timeframes. It will take lots of practice to maintain longer sentences with less air as this particular exercise illustrates.
-
Your vocal registers will slowly move from M1, to M2, to M3 as your training progresses and you gain better control of your voice.
